Understanding Our Own Value and Impact

[Author’s Context: It is Thanksgiving week here in the United States, which means, hopefully, many of us are taking a moment to pause and be grateful for the things we have. It is also 4:15am here in Connecticut, the feelings are flowing out of me, and I can’t sleep… which means I am writing in our blog. Good morning!]

Like any business owner, I spend a lot of time thinking about our business here at The Latimer Group. And like any business owner, I always try to understand the impact we are making and the value we are providing. When I understand it, I can articulate it, which helps our business in countless ways. But when I understand it, I can also feel it, which helps me in countless ways. Because when I can feel it, when I can feel the way we are actually helping people, it motivates me to go a little further, work a little harder, push a little more.

When we understand the true impact of our work, our work makes more sense. In our Latimer world, the value that we sell is the value to the organization. And I am proud of that value. But the value that gets me up in the morning, is the value delivered one person at a time, to the individual. The moments that give me goosebumps are those moments when we help someone get over their anxiety, find their voice, and speak up… those moments when we help a person organize their thoughts on a complicated topic so that they can articulate something really important to their colleagues and customers… those moments when we help someone be heard… those moments when we help someone advocate for the things they believe in. Those are the moments that cause me to leap out of bed in the morning.

What makes you leap out of bed in the morning? Your answer will certainly be different from mine. And it should be. I don’t care what your answer is. I only care that you have an answer. Because when you know what your true impact and value is, that morning leap becomes easier to make. It becomes easier to make good business choices, hire a strong team that works together, connect with your clients, build new relationships…. a long list for sure. There is a big difference between what we do, and the impact we have. And that’s the difference we all need to understand. That’s where the magic happens. What do I do? I lead a company that teaches, coaches and trains communication skills. But what impact do I have? I lead a company that empowers people to advocate for the things they believe in. Big difference.

What motivates you? Spend some time on that over this holiday. Spend some time being grateful for the things you have. But also spend some time getting in touch with the impact you have on the people around you. Because when you know your purpose, and can understand its power, you will be equipped to approach each day with conviction. And in a world that seems to be a little too crazy, a little too complicated, the best armor we can have is the strength of conviction about our own impact. I may not be able to change the entire world, and solve all the big problems we face. But if I can make an impact on a few people each day, that’s the next best thing. And the same is true for you.

Good luck, and have a great day.
