The Most Valuable Person In The Room

There is a theme that comes up in every workshop we teach… we live in a really noisy world. The world is indeed very loud, with a seemingly endless competition for mindshare and attention. And everyone we speak to is drowning in too much information, too many meetings, too much access, too little time.

This problem is widespread and chronic.

This problem has also changed what it means to be a great communicator, and what it means to be “valuable” to your colleagues. Twenty one years ago, right around the time I started The Latimer Group, you could be the most valuable person in the room by having more and better information than everyone else. Information was not nearly as readily available and accessible as it is today. Not even close.

But, now for a variety of reasons, everyone has all the information and data that they need… and then some.

Today, the most valuable person in the room is not the person with the most information.

Today, the most valuable person in the room is the one who can synthesize information into usable forms.

Today, the most valuable person in the room is the one who can make things simple and absorbable and easy to listen to.

Today, the most valuable person in the room is the one who can chart a course through the chaos, and who can help the group craft a plan.

I relearn this lesson over and over in every workshop I teach. People are literally craving simplicity. Be the one who can provide it. You will be adding immense value to everything around you.

Have a great day.

Does your team:
– Take too long to make decision?
– Fail to ask for what it wants or needs from you?
– Make things too complicated?
– Deliver unconvincing or disorganized presentations?
– Have new hires who are unprepared to communicate in the workplace?
