The Message Makeover Podcast: Elon Musk and Awareness

This post was written by Dan Cooney, Director of Coaching and Senior Facilitator at The Latimer Group.

In our awesome second episode of The Message Makeover (yes, I’m terribly biased), we look at the wildly interesting Elon Musk and the communications spree he’s been on lately. Tesla is burning through cash, they are struggling to fix significant production problems with the Model 3, and the short-sellers are circling. In that environment, it would typically be a good idea to show up at your Quarterly Earnings call well-prepared for the tough questions that surely would come. One might have brought enough patience to fill a Falcon Heavy-sized rocket and have practiced your deep breathing prior to the call.

Well, Elon Musk, who I greatly admire – flunked the call by insulting the analysts and talking over his CFO. Just this week Musk announced a flattening of the organizational structure and the departure of two key executives. The pot of Tesla turmoil continues to boil over.

At The Latimer Group we spend a lot of time speaking to the importance of awareness as you prepare your communications. Self-awareness, audience awareness, situational awareness and message awareness. While persuasive communication is at the center of our core model, it’s awareness that surrounds the model and holds it together. Check out the podcast and see how we coach this real-life Iron Man, Elon Musk, on awareness.
