Is Communication a “Soft Skill”?

Communication is often labeled a “soft skill.” Implying it is secondary behind the dominant “hard skills” which are more easily measurable like engineering, coding, physics. At LatimerNext, we disagree! We think of communication differently. Without communication skills, even if you’re the best at what you do, you will find it hard to advance and grow throughout your career.

So how do we label this critical skill? One that is front and center to your success? We call it a keystone skill. A skill that links together and enhances all of your other talents, and finishes the support structure that becomes the bridge between you and your goals.

How does an entry-level developer become a Manager or Director? Most likely, it’s not because they are the best engineers, with the most skills. The people who communicate most effectively are almost always the ones who rise within an organization. They can better articulate those hard skills. And, they can connect, inspire, engage, and ultimately advocate for themselves and what they believe; all key attributes to what it takes to be a great .

So ask yourself, how do you see your career path proceeding? Where do you want to be in five years? Ten? Twenty? If you want to launch and advance your career, no matter your path, or expertise, then you need to learn how to be an effective communicator. Communication is not a “soft skill,” it is the “keystone skill” that you will need to be successful, at every company in every industry and in all walks of life. In this course we will teach you how to communicate in an outstanding way so you can enhance a keystone skill and create a bridge of your own towards your unique definition of success.
