Simple Advice: Bring Positivity, Every Day

Keeping your energy level up all the time is hard. We all get tired. We all get frustrated. We all get sick of our work/colleagues/friends/family/selves. And when we are sick of any of these things, and our energy level drops, so too our productivity suffers.

One of the best quotes I have ever heard (well… more of an attitude than a quote) is that “positivity is a choice to be made every morning.” The obvious corollary then is that being negative is also a choice. When we are in a negative mode, we are less productive, we are less fun to be around, people won’t want to follow us, people won’t be persuaded or influenced by us… the list goes on. No one wants to be around a negative person. Your abilities as a communicator, leader and colleague will be directly connected to your outlook and your energy level. Positive people communicate positively. Negative people communicate negatively. And the simple fact is that people are drawn to those who exude positive energy and bring passion with them everyday.

This is not always easy. We all have our bad days and bad stretches, including me. Personally and professionally, we all have our ups and downs. And sometimes, the challenge to being positive is about something deeper than just having “a bad day.” Mental health is no joke, and perhaps like many of you, I have had my tough stretches. But no matter what, good stretch, bad stretch, or really bad stretch, in my experience, one of the best paths forward is to do our very best to bring some energy and passion into our day, every day. I have found that when things go badly, being negative about it will not change anything. It will only make it worse. And when things are going well, being positive provides the best chance of keeping the momentum going.

Simple, and perhaps obvious, advice for sure. But it is easy to forget sometimes, especially when you are IN one of those more difficult periods. So, based on the assumption that at least SOME of you are in a tough mode right now, I share the simple advice and reminder that being positive is a daily choice, and the more often you make the choice for positivity, the more likely you are to get into a good stretch of productivity and success. That has been my experience, and hopefully yours as well.

Have a great day.
