This week was the 121st running of the Boston Marathon. Boston is unlike any other marathon; the course, the crowds, and its history make it unique.
This year was especially significant– it was the 50th anniversary of the first woman to finish the race as an official entrant. In 1967, Kathrine Switzer entered the race using her initials K.V. Despite being tackled and nearly forced from the course in the first two miles, she finished the race and made history.
Thanks to Kathrine’s brave accomplishment, women have officially entered and competed in Boston since 1976. On this anniversary, Kathrine was interviewed about women’s running and said,
“They’re running because they’re empowered. They’re running because their lives have been changed so positively by the sense of accomplishment and self-esteem they have gained from running.”
Whether we’re runners or not, Kathrine is an inspiration for all of us. Her words resonate: empowerment, accomplishment and self-esteem. Think about your personal or professional life.
