Exploring Your Personal Brand

Exploring your personal brand helps you identify your strengths and your unique contribution to your organization.

Today’s post was written by Amy Fenollosa, Director of Learning at The Latimer Group.

Last week I had the pleasure of teaching personal branding at a Women’s Leadership Conference for one of our clients. It was an incredible event—women from across the country gathered to share experiences and learn together at an annual retreat. Like the sun rising over the horizon and reflecting on the Atlantic, this workshop gave us time to reflect on ourselves.

Personal Branding is an introspective process that challenges people to explore their unique strengths and the impression that they leave on every interaction. During this conference, we had intense sessions; short in duration, but not in substance. The room was abuzz in conversation as women eagerly discussed their personal brands with long-time colleagues, business acquaintances and new friends. The enthusiasm and the open, honest discussions that took place throughout the day were inspiring.

At the end of the day, one participant stood up and shared her story.

“When you explore your personal brand, you begin to learn what’s important to you, and what your passion is,” she began. “Once you find it, you’ll know.  And there’s no stopping you when you discover it. You’ll want to share your story with everyone you meet. Don’t stop searching until you’ve found your passion. Show your brand, share your story. Empower the people around you.”

When you dedicate time to your personal brand you’ll find confidence. When you show congruence between who you are and what you do, it is empowering. At The Latimer Group, we coach our clients to communicate authentically. When you show your brand and share your story, you’re doing just that. As the evangelist of your own brand, you’re aligning your passions with your position and promoting yourself. Demonstrating your personal brand helps you differentiate yourself and ensures you’re recognized for your unique contribution to the organization. Think about the impression you leave on every interaction. Do you reflect who you are?

Video: The 4 Skills of Great Communication

Ask anyone who performs at a high level: athletes, dancers, singers, etc. They all prepare and practice their skills the same way. They break their skill down into smaller “sub-skills,” then practice each one individually, then put them all back together, and their overall skill level has improved. The same is true with communication. “Great… Continue Reading

Kathrine Switzer and the Boston Marathon: A Lesson in Empowerment

Today’s post was written by Amy Fenollosa, Director of Learning at The Latimer Group. This week was the 121st running of the Boston Marathon. Boston is unlike any other marathon; the course, the crowds, and its history make it unique. This year was especially significant– it was the 50th anniversary of the first woman to… Continue Reading

Want Stronger Communication? Eliminate Weak Language

This past weekend, I was at the breakfast table sharing coffee with my wife, and our seven-year old son. While we were sitting there, he asked me lots of questions (as always) about whatever was inside his head. Today, it was plants and how they grow. And I said something like, “All living things keep growing, all… Continue Reading

How Distracting is Your Speaking Style?

Have you ever listened to that person who says something like “um” over and over and over? After a while, all you hear are the “ums.” How about the person who says “like,” or “you know?” Hard to listen to that after a while. How about the person who qualifies everything they say with a… Continue Reading

Petulance, Parenting, and the President

Earlier this morning, I was thinking about the way I coach clients. My colleagues and I always preach the important of message AND delivery. Message matters, first and foremost. But the way in which the message is delivered has a huge impact on the way the message is received. And then on my drive into… Continue Reading

10 Time Management Tips to Create Better Communication

Simple idea today, that recently came up in a coaching session. My colleagues and I talk all the time about great communication skills, and all the things that help create those skills. We believe that when we take the time to prepare for our meetings, presentations and calls, we will do a much better job… Continue Reading

Leadership Tips: When to Debate, When to Dictate

I’m working with an executive right now who has an interesting and engaging leadership style. He likes to collaborate, he likes dialogue, he wants to hear what people have to say. He allows lots of input, and seems to detest strict hierarchy. I like this style, actually, because it is similar to my own. But… Continue Reading

The Most Important Ability You Need in the Workplace

(This post written by Brett Slater, Chief Social Media Officer at The Latimer Group) I got an amazing text from Dean yesterday while he was in a break at one of The Latimer Group’s workshops: “The most important ability in the workplace is account-ability…”  Whoa. Mind::blown. That phrase popped up spontaneously in that workshop, and we… Continue Reading
