Video: To Persuade, Be More Than a Messenger

Throughout our business lives, our communication is peppered with information, updates, and messages, many of which it’s up to us to deliver. But to truly persuade, we must build consensus around our plan or idea. And to do that, we must do more than give an update, or deliver a message. We must prepare our message, know our audience, and get into a space where we’re focused on what’s important to them.

In the video below from a recent client conference, our Director of Learning Amy Fenollosa talks about the magic that comes when you communicate with the mindset of being MORE than a messenger:

Steve Jobs, On PowerPoint

I recently stumbled across a great quote from Steve Jobs, that captures exactly how we feel about PowerPoint here at The Latimer Group: “I hate the way people use slide presentations instead of thinking. People confront problems by creating presentations. I want them to engage, to hash things out at the table, rather than show… Continue Reading

To Be a Better Presenter, Prepare for Floods (or Anything!)

This post was written by Amy Fenollosa, Director of Learning at The Latimer Group Last week, we narrowly escaped a technological catastrophe… We had a total flood in our office. Gallons of water rained down from the ceiling directly above the desk in our webinar presentation space. We’d only been in our new office space… Continue Reading

In God We Trust… Everyone Else, Bring Data

There are a few questions we frequently hear from our workshop participants. And perhaps the most vexing is the question of detail… how much do I need, where do I put it, how much is too much? Without exception, it comes up and is a major topic of conversation in every workshop. Why? For two… Continue Reading

The Words We Use Matter. Choose Them Carefully.

The recent controversy over Bill Maher’s use of a racial epithet was yet another example of the power of language. Words have meaning, both good and bad. Words have power, both good and bad. Words make us feel things, both good and bad. This post is not about Bill Maher, the politics of language or… Continue Reading

Always Be Ready to Argue the Other Side

We think and talk about persuasion a lot over here at The Latimer Group. We believe that the ability to use your words to create good outcomes is a critical skill in our world today… this has probably always been true, but perhaps never MORE true than it is today. In a world where communication… Continue Reading

Your Colleagues Will Build a Statue in Your Honor

In nearly every workshop I teach, I ask a question that sounds something like this: “How many of you attend too many meetings that run long?” Nearly every hand goes up, every time. “How many of you get too many emails that are too overwhelming to read?” Nearly every hand goes up, every time. “How… Continue Reading

Communication Doesn’t Have to Be Difficult

Communication clarity is really hard in the 21st century… a mantra I have recited over and over in this space. It’s hard because of the noise, the competition for mind share, and shrinking attentions spans. But often the best way to combat difficulty and noise is to focus on the most simple, basic elements of… Continue Reading

Be the Fearless Girl. Stare Down the Bull!

Today’s post was written by Amy Fenollosa, Director of Learning at The Latimer Group. State Street Global Advisors pulled off a brilliant coup with its surprise installation of the “Fearless Girl” on Wednesday morning to acknowledge International Women’s Day. State Street has been advocating to increase the number of women in leadership roles and sitting on… Continue Reading
