Communication Lessons from the Road, Part 2

gettothepoint

In our last post, we talked about the undeniable benefits of having a broad perspective on communication and having a high sensitivity for audience understanding. Global travel is a great way to broaden your perspective and to realize the vastly different ways people communicate.

We believe firmly in audience understanding as a mission critical component to 21st century business success.

But at the same time, one thing to keep in mind, is that regardless of where your audience is from, no one likes having their time wasted. Business audiences the world over appreciate a speaker’s ability to get to the point. We continue to test this point with executives all over the world, and in our experience brevity and clarity translate everywhere: China, Singapore, Australia, Johannesburg, Rio de Janeiro, India, all over Europe and certainly all over North America. Regardless of where your audience was born, if your business audience has any level of responsibility, then in addition to appreciating cultural differences, you also need to be able “to speak executive.”

You can and should make some other adjustments when speaking to your global audience. But what should be non-negotiable is your ability communicate value and get to the point quickly. Your global audience will love you for it.

Good luck.
